Are currency exchanges a scam?

No, currency exchanges in the UK are not inherently a scam, but some can be expensive or offer poor value.

Things to watch for:

  • Exchange rate markup – Many exchange services advertise “0% commission” but make money by giving you a worse exchange rate.
  • Hidden fees – Some providers add service charges or handling fees.
  • Airport exchanges – These often have some of the least competitive rates.
  • Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) – When paying abroad, merchants may offer to charge you in pounds. This is usually more expensive than paying in the local currency.

In the UK, regulated providers such as banks and established foreign exchange companies are generally legitimate. Examples include Wise, Revolut, Post Office Travel Money, and Eurochange.

A good rule is to compare:

  1. The exchange rate offered.
  2. Any fees or commission.
  3. The total amount you will receive.

If an exchange service is transparent about its rates and fees, it is usually not a scam—just potentially more or less expensive than competitors.
