How do I report money fraud in the UK?

If you need to report money fraud in the UK, here are the steps you should follow:

What you should do first

  • Contact your bank immediately if you’ve transferred money or your account has been accessed.
  • Make sure you gather as much information as possible: who you were dealing with, how you paid (bank transfer, card payment, etc.), what details you gave out, etc. Citizens Advice+1
  • If you are in immediate danger (e.g., someone is threatening you physically, or you’re being coerced/followed), call 999. nidirect+1

📍 Where to report the fraud

For England, Wales and Northern Ireland:

  • Use the national reporting centre: Action Fraud. You can report online or by telephone on 0300 123 2040. police.uk+2Action Fraud+2
  • If you prefer online, you can use their form and you’ll receive a crime reference number. Action Fraud+1

For Scotland:

  • Fraud should be reported to Police Scotland (you can use 101 for non-emergency) rather than Action Fraud for certain types of fraud. FCA+1

For internet phishing/emails:

  • Forward suspicious emails to report@phishing.gov.uk
