How to tell if a Bitcoin is real or scam?

To check whether something related to Bitcoin is real or a scam, you need to verify both the Bitcoin itself (transaction) and the platform, wallet, or person involved. Here’s a clear guide:

How to Tell if Bitcoin is Real

Bitcoin is digital, so you verify it on the blockchain.

  1. Ask for the Transaction ID (TXID)
  • Every Bitcoin transfer has a unique public record.
  • You can check it on a blockchain explorer (e.g. btc.com, blockchain.com).
  1. Verify the TXID on the Blockchain

When you search the TXID, check:

Item What to Check
Status Must show Confirmed, not Pending forever
Amount Matches what was claimed
Sender/Receiver Address Addresses exist on the blockchain
Timestamp Must not be old or duplicated

⚠️ If someone refuses to share the TXID, it’s a red flag.

  1. Check Your Wallet Balance

Bitcoin must reflect in your own wallet, not screenshots. Real bitcoins appear only in your wallet app (e.g., Trust Wallet, Exodus, Ledger, Coinbase, Binance).

Signs of a Bitcoin Scam

If you see any of these, it’s almost certainly fake:

🚩 1. Promises of Guaranteed Profits

Example scams:

  • “Invest ₹10,000 and get ₹50,000 in 7 days”
  • “Guaranteed 200% return”

➡ Bitcoin has no guaranteed return.

🚩 2. They Ask for Money First

  • “Pay a release fee”
  • “Pay tax before withdrawal”
  • “Pay gas fee to receive BTC”

👉 Real Bitcoin never needs extra payment to claim it.

🚩 3. You Can’t Withdraw Anytime

Scam websites show fake balances but don’t allow withdrawals.

🚩 4. Only Contact Through Telegram/WhatsApp

Often they send screenshots of huge profits — all fake.

🚩 5. Unknown Crypto Exchanges

Scam platforms look official but are fake. Check if an exchange is registered and widely known.

🛡️ How to Stay Safe

✔ Use only trusted exchanges: Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, WazirX, CoinDCX (India)
✔ Don’t invest because of influencers or friends showing profits.
✔ Never share your private key or seed phrase.
✔ Research the company or platform online (look for reviews).
✔ If unsure, ask an expert or verify with others.

🕵️ Extra Tip: Fake Transaction Screenshots

Scammers use Photoshop to fake balance or transfers. Always ask for:

  • The TXID
  • Verification on a blockchain explorer

No TXID = No Bitcoin.
